Ecology finds application incomplete for Kalama methanol project

OLYMPIA  –  The Washington Department of Ecology issued the following statement regarding its review of an application for a shoreline conditional use permit for a proposed methanol project in Kalama:

“We have determined that the Port of Kalama and Northwest Innovation Works’ application for a shoreline conditional use permit is incomplete. Therefore, we have halted our review of Cowlitz County’s permit approval while we seek additional information from the county and applicants.

“Our review of the county’s permit decision found significant information missing from the project’s supplemental environmental impact statement and inadequate analysis of the project’s potential effects on Washington’s environment.

“The required information focuses on two key areas: specific details on the proposed mitigation plan to address the project’s in-state greenhouse gas emissions, and a thorough, comprehensive analysis of the project’s global and in-state greenhouse gas emissions.

“We have given the county and applicants until Nov. 7, 2019, to provide this information. Once the information has been received, we will decide whether additional environmental review is required or issue a final permit decision within 30 days.”
