Boise Cascade Lumber, Kettle Falls

Air Operating permit

May 10, 2022 - June 9, 2022, 11:59 p.m.

Ecology proposes to approve the draft renewal of an air operating permit (AOP) for Boise Cascade Kettle Falls Lumber.

Boise Cascade Wood Products Kettle Falls Lumber is located at 610 West Third Avenue in Kettle Falls. It is a sawmill that manufactures lumber from logs, operates lumber drying kilns and hogged fuel boiler, and handles wood residual. The main air pollution emitting processes at the facility are lumber drying kilns, a hogged fuel boiler, lumber planer, and wood residual collection system.

In 2017, Ecology issued a new air quality notice of construction (NOC) permit to reestablish boiler soot blowing as part of its daily operations. This process is generally accepted as a way to improve boiler efficiency throughout the year. As a result, this change has reduced the overall potential emissions for the facility.

Background

Commercial and industrial businesses that emit large amounts of air pollution are required to get an air operating permit. An air operating permit is a master document that lists all of the air pollution requirements that apply to a business or industry. We issue these permits along with other clean air agencies in Washington.
