Draft closure plan

Emerald Kalama & Fire Mountain Farms

July 9, 2020 - Aug. 7, 2020, 12 a.m.

We invite you to comment on the draft closure plan for Emerald Kalama Chemical (Emerald) and Fire Mountain Farms (FMF) to remove delisted hazardous waste from three facilities owned and operated by FMF in Lewis County. This draft plan outlines how the companies will remove and properly dispose of any wastewater, solids, and contaminated soil during cleaning of the three storage facilities.

For more information on the closure plan or how to comment, see our public comment notice.

Once we have approved a closure plan, Emerald and FMF will implement it. We currently have no time frame set, but the material could start to be removed from Lewis County as early as this summer.

Emerald is a chemical manufacturing facility located at 1296 Third St. NW in Kalama. They use toluene as a
raw material to make flavorings, fragrances, preservatives, plasticizers, and other products used in the food,
beverage, paint, and pharmaceutical industries.

FMF does business at several locations throughout Lewis Couny and operates several receiving, storage, and
land application facilities for biosolids from municipal and private wastewater treatment facilities.
