Intalco Aluminum Smelter

Air Quality Order

May 8, 2019 - June 10, 2019

We invite you to comment on air quality agreed order 16449 requiring Alcoa's Intalco aluminum smelter in Ferndale, Whatcom County, to install new pollution control equipment to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions.

Visit our webpage for more information on the project.

Intalco and the Department of Ecology have been working to accurately measure and monitor sulfur dioxide concentrations near the facility in order to comply with updated federal air quality standards for sulfur dioxide. The reductions are part of an agreement to address sulfur dioxide levels recorded near the smelter in recent years.

You can find more information on sulfur dioxide monitoring and the steps Ecology and the local air agency, Northwest Clean Air, are taking to protect air quality at www.ecology.wa.gov/sulfurdioxide
