Cleanup site periodic review

May 8, 2023 - June 7, 2023, 11:59 p.m.

We review conditions at sites where some contamination remains about every five years, to make sure the cleanup is still effective.

We invite you to comment on the January 2023 Periodic Reveiw conducted at the Everett Shipyard site, at 1016 4th Street on the Everett waterfront. Based on this review, Ecology has determined that the cleanup and institutional controls are still protecting living things. No additional cleanup action is required at this time. It is the property owner’s responsibility to continue to inspect the site to assure that the integrity of the protective cap is maintained.

We will review all comments we receive during the comment period. We finalize the periodic review if no significant changes are made. We will hold a public meeting if 10 or more people request one.

Background

This project is a testament to the remarkable potential of environmental cleanup. The site was a boat building, maintenance, and repair facility from 1947–2009. It was heavily contaminated and inaccessible to the public. The upland cleanup was completed in 2014. Marine sediment cleanup was completed in 2015. The cleanup allowed the construction of a new apartment building, a public esplanade and dock walk, stormwater treatment facilities, and the ongoing development of retail shops by the Port.
