Hungry Whale Grocery, Westport

Online Informational Meeting: Contamination Cleanup and Agreed Order

June 22, 2022, 5 p.m., Online webinar

We invite you to an informational meeting about the Hungry Whale cleanup. At the meeting, we will review information about the site and answer questions.

Ecology is directing cleanup of petroleum contamination at the site. The proposed cleanup is a combination of soil excavation and groundwater removal. The Port of Grays Harbor is responsible for the cleanup. The port will:

  • Demolish the convenience store.
  • Remove all underground storage tanks and fuel dispensing equipment.
  • Contaminated soil will be excavated and replaced with clean material.
  • Groundwater entering the soil excavation will be removed and treated. After treatment, tests will confirm the water is clean enough to be released.
  • Conditions at the site will be monitored to make sure contamination decreases in groundwater.
  • If contamination remains at the site after cleanup, an environmental covenant will be filed with the county and we will review conditions at the site every five years.
