Excess nutrients can cause too much plant and algae growth which ultimately depletes dissolved oxygen. Many parts of Puget Sound have oxygen levels that fall below the concentrations needed for marine life to thrive and concentrations that are below the state’s water quality criteria.
This National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) water quality permit will help control the discharge of nutrients from domestic wastewater treatment plants, following the federal Water Pollution Control Act and state Water Pollution Control laws.
