We've drafted the Pilchuck River Dissolved Oxygen and Temperature water quality improvement plan. This draft water quality improvement plan aims to address two issues in the river — high water temperatures and low dissolved oxygen levels. The goal of the water quality improvement plan is to identify water quality and riparian habitat improvements needed to protect salmon and other aquatic life in the Pilchuck River watershed. Once finalized and implemented, this plan should lead to more functional habitat for salmon and other species.

The federal Clean Water Act requires states to develop a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) — or water quality improvement project — plan for each water body on the state's polluted waters list, also known as the 303(d) list. This science-based approach assigns a numerical value that represents the highest amount of a pollutant a surface water body can receive and still meet the water quality standards. Learn more about the TMDL process.
