We held an afternoon meeting and public hearing about the draft permit for the West Point Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The virtual hearing included a brief presentation (download PDF slides) at the beginning to explain the draft permit and to answer clarifying questions. The formal public hearing began after the information session finishes and ended when public testimony is complete. During the hearing, people were allowed to give oral testimony on the draft permit.
This was one of two opportunities to attend a formal public hearing for the draft permit. We had another hearing the evening of May 9, 2023. Go to the public notice page for other ways to comment. Written comments receive the same consideration as oral testimony.
The West Point Wastewater Treatment Plant (West Point), located near Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood, treats domestic sewage and stormwater from the Seattle area. West Point treats sewage from homes and businesses, as well as industrial wastewater. Read the blog: West Point Treatment Plant water quality permit up for review.
The draft permit establishes conditions King County must meet to legally discharge treated wastewater to Puget Sound. It also contains requirements to control water pollution from combined sewer overflows (CSO) that discharge into surface waters around Seattle. Collectively, the requirements in the draft permit establish the minimum standards King County must meet to protect water quality.
The fact sheet explains the legal basis for Ecology’s decisions about the requirements in the draft permit. This includes describing the standards we apply and how we calculate numerical limits on pollutants.
