Committee meeting for WRIA 14

Watershed Restoration and Enhancement Committee Meetings

October 31, 2018 9:00 AM

The committee meeting is from 9 am to 12 pm.

This is the first meeting of the Watershed Restoration and Enhancement Committee for WRIA 14 (Kennedy-Goldsborough). The meeting will provide a presentation on the Streamflow Restoration law, an overview of the committee’s major decision points and task at hand, and an introduction to the committee’s operating principles and charter.

Background:
The law, RCW 90.94 Streamflow Restoration, helps protect water resources while providing water for families in rural Washington. The law directs local planning groups to develop streamflow restoration plans that address potential impacts from new development. Eight watersheds are directed by Section 203 of the new law to adopt watershed restoration and enhancement plans. A new committee, the Watershed Restoration and Enhancement Committee, is established for each of the Section 203 watersheds.

The eight committees have until June 2021 to complete plans that estimate the 20-year consumptive use from permit-exempt wells and identify projects to offset that consumptive use. The plans must result in net ecological benefit. The first meeting of the committees will take place in late October.

The law also invests $300 million over the next 15 years in projects that will help fish and streamflows.
