Studying Washington's plastic packaging

To size up how big the plastics problem is, we are contracting a study to focus on plastic packaging in Washington. State legislators have set a 2025 goal that all packaging sold in Washington will be 100% recyclable, reusable, or compostable, and that this packaging contains at least 20% postconsumer recycled material.

We need to gauge the full scope of Washington's plastic packaging problem to best tackle pollution from plastics.

Ultimately, our plastic problems require us to look upstream before a product is purchased, and downstream to where the packaging winds up. We will need innovations in packaging design and how plastic packaging is managed once it's no longer wanted.

The legislation directing this study also sets a goal that 100% of Washington's plastic packaging be recycled, reused, or composted, and that this packaging should contain at least 20% postconsumer recycled material.

We have contracted Cascadia Consulting to carry out the plastic packaging study. Their work will help us develop options to reduce plastics packaging in Washington's waste stream by Jan. 1, 2022.
