Vader Shoreline Master Program

We are conducting our formal review of the city of Vader's proposed update to its Shoreline Master Program (SMP). We held a public comment period on the proposed update from July 6 through Aug. 7, 2017.

Mail and email were used to notify those who had expressed prior interest. No comments on the proposed master program were submitted.

Vader’s proposed Shoreline Master Program (SMP) will guide construction and development along approximately 6,900 feet of the Olequa Creek shoreline. The proposed SMP update contains locally-tailored shoreline management policies, regulations, environment designations, and administrative provisions as well as critical areas regulations to manage shoreline development throughout Vader's shoreline jurisdiction.

The shoreline program gives priority to conservation and enhancement of native shoreline vegetation and encourages habitat-friendly shoreline protection measures. The SMP establishes procedures to preserve and protect cultural and archaeological resources, prohibits overwater coverage by new docks and piers, and clarifies public access requirements.

Next steps: our decision

We will compare Vader’s proposed shoreline program with the requirements of the state Shoreline Management Act and our Shoreline Master Program Guidelines. Based on the comparison, we will decide whether to:

  • Approve the program as is.
  • Approve the program with recommended changes.
  • Send the proposed program back to Vader with required changes to meet statutory and rule requirements. Recommended changes may also be included with the required changes.
