On Sept. 24, 2021, we approved the city of Vader's shoreline master program (SMP) comprehensive update and periodic review amendment. Per RCW 90.58.090, the effective date of Vader’s SMP is Oct. 8, 2021, 14 days after we provided notice to the city that their SMP was approved.
The comprehensive update replaces Vader's existing SMP, including the goals, policies, regulations, and administrative procedures and definitions. The city's proposed SMP establishes shoreline buffers on all shorelines, regulates critical areas within shoreline jurisdiction by adopting the city’s critical areas protection ordinance by reference, with exclusions, and includes requirements for mitigation for unavoidable impacts. The shoreline master program gives priority to conservation and enhancement of native shoreline vegetation and encourages habitat-friendly shoreline protection measures. The SMP establishes procedures to preserve and protect cultural and archaeological resources, prohibits over water coverage by new docks and piers, and clarifies public access requirements.
The periodic review ensures the SMP is current with changes in state law, changes in other city plans and regulations, and other changed circumstances.
The updated SMP will guide development and activities along approximately 6,900 feet of Olequa Creek.
We used email to notify interested parties of the public comment periods and to encourage public participation and comment. A public comment period for the comprehensive SMP update was held July 6 to Aug. 7, 2017. No comments were received. A joint public comment period for the periodic review was held April 19 to May 19, 2021. No comments were received.
