Bainbridge Island Amendment 2018

The city of Bainbridge Island and Ecology's Shoreline Master Program are holding a joint public comment period and public hearing.

  • Public comment requested: May 11 to 5:00 p.m. on June 11, 2018.
  • Public Hearing: May 24, 2018

The City of Bainbridge Island and Ecology seek public comment on the city's proposed amendment to its Shoreline Master Program (SMP) using the optional joint review process under WAC 173-26-104.

The city has prepared draft amendments to update the critical areas provisions of their Shoreline Master Program, following the recent adoption of their updated Critical Areas Ordinance. The stated purpose of this amendment is to eliminate confusion and improve implementation effectiveness by removing unnecessary differences between the city's updated Critical Areas Ordinance and the critical areas protections within the SMP.

The draft SMP materials are available for in-person review at the following location:

City of Bainbridge Island
Department of Planning and Community Development
280 Madison Ave. N.
Bainbridge Island, WA 98110

The documents are also available to view and download from the city's website at:
www.bainbridgewa.gov/184/Shoreline-Master-Program

Public comments regarding the amendment should be sent to the city during the 30-day comment period running from May 11 until 5:00 p.m. on June 11, 2018. In addition, a joint local-state hearing for the amendment will be held May 24, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. as part of the city's Planning Commission Meeting. Comments sent to the city or testimony provided at the joint pubic hearing will be shared with us.

Joint Public Hearing: May 24, 2018, at 7:00 p.m.

Next steps: Response to public comment and decision

The city will prepare a summary of comments, with their response, to be posted on our website a few weeks after the public comment period closes. We will review and make a determination of consistency prior to local adoption.

After local adoption, the SMP amendment will be formally submitted to us for final decision per WAC 173-26-104 and WAC 173-26-110. No additional comment period will occur during the state review process. This may be your only opportunity to comment on this proposed SMP amendment.
