On July 17, 2018, we approved the Ferry County Coalition’s (Coalition) comprehensive shoreline master program (SMP) update. Coalition members include Ferry County and the City of Republic. Under the state Shoreline Management Act, the effective date of the Coalition's SMP is July 31, 2018, 14 days after we notified the Coalition their SMP was approved.
The comprehensive update revises the existing shoreline program for each jurisdiction, including the goals, policies, regulations, shoreline environment designations, and administrative procedures and definitions. The City of Republic and Ferry County jointly prepared the comprehensive SMP update to better coordinate shoreline management. More than fifty-two thousand acres of shoreline area will be subject to the updated SMP in Ferry County, including areas along the Columbia, Sanpoil, and Kettle Rivers, Boulder, Sherman, and Granite Creeks, and many lakes including the popular Curlew Lake and remote Swan Lake.
On January 22, 2018, we provided Coalition members with recommended changes to their proposed comprehensive SMP update based primarily on edits generated by Coalition staff in response to comments received during our review and a public comment period held July 5 through August 25, 2016.
We used mail and email to notify interested parties about the public comment period. On September 2, 2016, we sent a summary of comments to the Coalition for their response by June 25, 2018.
