Whatcom County Amendment 2017

We are seeking comment on Whatcom County's proposed amendment to its Shoreline Master Program (SMP). The public comment period starts on March 12 and runs through April 11, 2018, at 5 p.m.

The amendment is limited to the incorporation of recently adopted changes to Whatcom County's critical Areas Ordinance (CAO) into its SMP. The changes would make the master program consistent with the CAO, subject to the existing exceptions outlined in the current master program.

We will compare Whatcom County’s proposed amendments to the requirements of the Shoreline Management Act and the Shoreline Master Program Guidelines. Based on the comparison, we will decide whether to:

  • Approve the amendments as is.
  • Approve the amendments with recommended changes.
  • Send the proposed amendments back to Whatcom County with required changes to meet statutory and rule requirements. Recommended changes may also be included with the required changes.
