Background

We are starting work on a statewide study of battery energy storage systems. The study will look at potential negative environmental impacts and ways to avoid, reduce and mitigate impacts. 

Battery energy storage systems, or ‘BESS’, use large, rechargeable batteries to store energy. They release power when people need more electricity or when power generation decreases. They can also provide backup power during outages and help strengthen the state’s electrical grid.  

The scoping document explains the study process and gives a general overview of battery energy storage.
