Walla Walla City Shop cleanup site

We visited the site August 9, 2023, and found the cleanup remains effective. No new excavation or ground disturbance has occurred, and no new wells have been drilled.

Soil with petroleum contamination above state standards may remain at the site; however, the contamination is contained. An environmental covenant documents it and prohibits any activities that would expose it.

Next steps

We will review all comments received during the comment period and update the periodic review, if needed. If no significant changes are made, the periodic review will become final. If significant changes are made, we will hold an additional public comment period. We will hold an online public meeting if 10 or more people request one.​​

Site history and cleanup

In November 1994, three underground storage tanks were removed. About 130 cubic yards of soil contaminated by a leaking waste oil tank were excavated. In 1999, two more soil excavations were done totaling 423 cubic yards. Some contaminated soil remains at the site, so an environmental covenant was filed to make any future property owners aware of it and prohibit activities that would expose it.

About periodic reviews

Periodic reviews are required when institutional controls are required at a site. Institutional controls can be fences, signs, or restrictions on how the property is used. Ecology conducts reviews to make sure the controls remain effective and the cleanup still protects human health and the environment. We conduct periodic reviews about every five years.
