How to choose a lab
Sound science depends on accurate and reliable lab results produced by accredited laboratories. When choosing an analytical lab, it is important to consider the status of its accreditation.
Use our search tools below to find an accredited lab. If you have trouble finding a lab, please contact us.
Check accreditation status for specific methods
Our Lab Search database shows all labs that we have accredited for one or more parameters. When looking for a lab, it's important to check if they are accredited for the parameters you need. By a parameter, we mean a specific analyte tested using a specific method in a specific matrix, such as “Total Suspended Solids by SM 2540D-2015 in non-potable water.”
Our Lab Locations map is an interactive map-based tool that includes those labs that accept samples from the public.
Finding a drinking water lab
Laboratories accredited for drinking water parameters are located in Washington state and across the nation. The state Department of Health regulates drinking water.
Laboratory reports
The lab report should show when the sample was collected, received, and analyzed. Basic laboratory reports should include information to establish that holding times are met. These records are especially essential when data may be legally challenged.
The analyte, method, and sample matrix should be clearly stated on your laboratory report. Quality control information from the analytical batch should also be provided.
Laboratories can provide full deliverables reports for your samples, containing all raw data, at your request. Be sure to communicate with the laboratory about the type of data report you will need.
If you need help interpreting a lab report, please reach out directly to the lab first. If you still have unanswered questions, we may be able to help.
Subcontracting
If you are a wastewater treatment plant or commercial lab looking to subcontract samples, please make sure that the lab you want to use is accredited through us for the parameters you need. Labs may have other accreditations, but there is no automatic reciprocity.
Feedback on lab performance
If you would like to provide feedback to us on the performance of one of our accredited labs, please email the Lab Accreditation Supervisor.
