The State Solid Waste Management Plan and the State Hazardous Waste Management Plan provide information and direction for residents, businesses, and governments to help them more wisely manage waste and materials. Mismanagement of waste can pollute the environment and harm human health. Our goal is to reduce or eliminate waste and toxics wherever we can.
State Solid Waste Management Plan
The State Solid Waste Management Plan guides the management of waste and materials in Washington. Its vision is to eliminate waste and toxics wherever possible and use the remaining waste as resources. The plan advances the state's waste management hierarchy, established in the solid waste statutes; that waste reduction is the highest priority, followed by recycling, and then safe disposal.
State Hazardous Waste Management Plan
The State Hazardous Waste Management Plan focuses primarily on assessing waste generation and capacity of hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal (TSD) facilities within the state. It also addresses TSD siting, public information, and education related to hazardous waste management, and local program coordination.
