Background
Safer Products for Washington establishes a process where we designate priority chemicals, identify products that contain those chemicals, determine needed regulatory actions, and adopt rules to implement regulatory actions. Before we can restrict the use of a chemical in an identified consumer product, the law requires that safer alternatives are feasible and available.
In May 2024, we published our Identification of Priority Chemicals Report to the Legislature: Cycle 2 Implementation Phase 1. This report identified seven chemical classes as priority chemicals for Cycle 2:
- Cadmium and cadmium compounds.
- Lead and lead compounds.
- Organobromine and/or organochlorine substances.
- Benzene, ethyl benzene, toluene, and xylene substances (BTEX).
- Formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers.
- Cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes (cVMS).
- 6PPD.
We also published two additional Cycle 2 resources to support the report to the Legislature:
