Site background
Boeing Renton is located on the south shore of Lake Washington and across the Cedar River from Renton Municipal Airport. Boeing bought the property in 1962 from the U.S. Air Force and has built planes there ever since — currently, 737 model aircraft.
In 2021, Boeing encountered an oily sheen during construction in the paved area in front of the 737 final assembly buildings. Boeing is investigating to find the nature and extent of contamination in that area.
In 2025, an unintended release of water with aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) occurred at the Compass Rose area. AFFF is a fire-fighting foam that contains per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), chemicals that can cause serious health conditions when exposed. Boeing promptly cleaned up the affected areas. More investigation will be done to determine the extent of PFAS contamination at Boeing Renton.
