Emergency response towing vessel analysis

Ecology is conducting an analysis of whether an Emergency Response Towing Vessel (ERTV) serving the waterways around the San Juan Islands would reduce oil spill risk.

Get involved

We welcome your input and encourage you to get involved. We will be hosting a series of outreach events on this project for Tribes and stakeholders starting in Spring 2022. We will announce event content and registration details as events are scheduled.

Our first event was a project kickoff webinar on June 8, 2022. A recording of the webinar along with a copy of the slides, Q&A session notes, and associated documents are available on our Outreach Documentation page.

Our second webinar will be held on July 13, 2022, from 10 a.m. to noon. This will be a joint event for the Tug Escort and ERTV analysis. REGISTER

Legislative direction

The Legislature directed Ecology to use its Oil Spill Risk Modeling Framework to “assess whether an emergency response towing vessel serving Haro Strait, Boundary Pass, Rosario Strait, and connected navigable waterways will reduce oil spill risk.” This language is in RCW 88.46.250. We will submit a summary report of this analysis to the Legislature by September 1, 2023.
