Sea Level Rise Webinar Series #2

Shoreline Management Act Rulemaking (Chapter 173-26 and 173-27 WAC)

Feb. 24, 2025, 12 p.m. PT, Online webinar

Topic: Planning for future coastal hazards with the Coastal Storm Modeling System
Speakers: Patrick Barnard, Research Geologist, United States Geological Survey; Maya Hayden, Environmental Scientist, United States Geological Survey; Chandler Countryman, Resilience and Adaptation Specialist, Washington Sea Grant; Sydney Fishman, Coastal Management Specialist, Washington Sea Grant

Ecology is currently conducting rulemaking under the Shoreline Management Act. A major focus of this rulemaking is to establish a new requirement for cities and counties to address the impact of sea level rise and increased storm severity in their shoreline master programs.

As we begin to draft these new requirements, we will be considering:

  • sea level rise science
  • anticipated impacts
  • available models and tools
  • management issues
  • examples of adaptation planning

Background

We are organizing a webinar series to host scientists and practitioners to present on these topics. These webinars are open to the public – we invite you to join us at lunch time in February and March for these presentations.
