Eatonville Landfill cleanup

This site is ready for the next stage of cleanup. The Town of Eatonville leased the land from the Weyerhaeuser Company to use as a dump from about 1950 to 1980. Eatonville and Weyerhaeuser are the potentially liable persons for the site. We invite your review and comment on:

• The Consent Decree is a legal agreement. It requires Eatonville and Weyerhaeuser to carry out Ecology's Cleanup Action Plan.
• The Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study describes the chemicals polluting the site and where they are, and compares cleanup options. Contaminants include metals, semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), and Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH).
• The  draft Cleanup Action Plan explains the proposed cleanup option, why we chose it, and the schedule, standards, and requirements.
  • In the Landfill Area, Ecology proposes fully removing the waste (about 21,500 cubic yards), fully removing contaminated soils (about 1,800 cubic yards), and restoring habitat.
  • In the Wetland Area, we propose removing as much waste as possible without disrupting the ecosystem, and monitoring natural recovery.
  • Ecology will put institutional controls at the site to prevent human exposure to contaminants during natural recovery.
• The State Environmental Policy Act Determination of Non-significance states that Ecology's cleanup plan is not likely to harm the environment.

The landfill covers about 2 acres. It is surrounded by Nisqually State Park, and is about a quarter mile from the Mashel River, a tributary of the Nisqually River. Both rivers are critical habitat for salmon and steelhead. The area is culturally important to the Nisqually Indian Tribe.
