South Park Landfill, Seattle

Comment on legal agreements for cleanup

Sept. 22, 2025, 12 a.m. - Oct. 21, 2025, 11:59 p.m. PT

This is a closed solid waste landfill on about 40 acres between Highway 99 and Highway 509, 1,600 feet southwest of the Duwamish River.

Cleanup work is moving forward at the South Park Landfill site in Seattle's South Park neighborhood.

The site is divided into four property parcelsThese documents address two parcels in the northwest corner of the site. The two sections are owned by different potentially liable persons: Schnitzer, LLC (Kenyon Industrial Park) and 7901 2nd Ave S LLC.

  • Two cleanup action plans: describe the cleanup actions needed to address contamination at the site.
    • 7901 2nd Ave S LLC will need to construct a landfill cap meeting the minimum requirements over their property.
    • Schnitzer, LLC need to inspect and maintain a stormwater pipe that runs through their property. They will also need to install two landfill gas probes to monitor for any methane moving off-site. Then they will need to construct a landfill cap meeting requirements over the property.
  • Two agreed orders (legal agreements): require the potentially liable persons to clean up their properties according to the cleanup action plans.
  • State Environmental Policy Act - Determination of Non-Significance: Documents our determination that the cleanup work is not likely to harm the environment.

The larger parcels that make up the south and east sides of the site are owned by the CenterPoint South Park and the City of Seattle, respectively. Both have made progress in performing necessary upgrades under a consent decree.
