Comment on periodic review of this cleanup site

April 17, 2025, 8 a.m. - May 16, 2025, 11:59 p.m. PT

We review conditions at sites where some contamination remains about every five years, to make sure the cleanup is still effective.

Our first review of this site confirmed that the cleanup is working well. The cleanup continues to protect both human health and the environment.

In 2014, Ecology selected Monitored Natural Attenuation as the cleanup method. This approach relies on natural processes to break down pollutants over time. In a 2023 review, we confirmed that pollution levels are decreasing and all regulations are being followed.

The full report is available our Frederickson Industrial Park webpage.

We will review all comments submitted during the comment period. If significant changes are needed, we will update the report, and may hold another public comment period. If significant changes are not needed, we will finalize the document. We will schedule a public meeting for this comment period if 10 or more people request one.

Background

Past industrial practices at the site contaminated the groundwater with carbon tetrachloride (CTC). Industries may use CTC as a cleaning agent and fire suppressant. Exposure to CTC can be harmful to human health and the environment.

Earlier work included removing contaminated soil and waste, treating the groundwater, and connecting private wells to a public water supply in 2007 to reduce exposure risks. Since then, the remaining CTC has been naturally breaking down. Ecology continues to watch the site to ensure the natural cleanup is progressing as expected.
