Comment on periodic review of this cleanup site

We review conditions at sites where some contamination remains about every five years, to make sure the cleanup is still effective.
The Louisiana Pacific Corp cleanup site was a log yard in the 1960s. During operations, contaminated smelter slag from the American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO) was used to stabilize the ground for machinery. Because of this, the soil is contaminated with metals.
Ecology issued an enforcement order requiring cleanup in 1992. In 1997, after workers installed a cap to cover soil contamination and a restrictive covenant was recorded for the property, Ecology issued a No Further Action determination. The Port of Tacoma currently owns the site and leases it to Wallenius Wilhelmsen Solutions. It is used for equipment storage.
About every five years, Ecology staff inspect the cap to check if it is still protecting human health and the environment. We also look at groundwater sample results.
Our inspection found that the cap is working and doesn’t need repairs. The inspection noted minor cracks in the cap which should be evaluated during the next cap inspection event. Groundwater samples from 2024 show that concentrations of all contaminants of concern are below cleanup levels.
The full periodic review report is available on the cleanup site webpage.
No further cleanup is required at this time. The property owner is responsible for maintaining the cap and conducting groundwater monitoring every 30 months. The next periodic review will be in five years.
