Sunnydell Dryke Shooting Range, Sequim
Comment on periodic review of this cleanup site
June 12, 2025, 8 a.m. - July 15, 2025, 11:59 p.m. PT
We review conditions at sites where some contamination remains about every five years, to make sure the cleanup is still effective.
The Sunnydell Dryke Shooting Range site is an active shooting range. It has been used for recreational shooting since 1967. A clubhouse, gun repair shop, residence, four active shooting range areas, and two ponds are located at this site. The active shooting range areas have several sporting clay shotgun shooting stations. There is also a handgun range which is rarely used.
Sampling found lead (from lead shot) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (from clay targets) at the site. Cleanup activities began in 2013 and included collecting lead shot from active shooting range areas and removing contaminated soil and sediment from a northern pond area.
Because this is an active shooting range, lead shot will build up over time. Therefore, Ecology requests the property owner provide a lead management plan describing how lead will be regularly removed from active shooting range areas. Other than the lead management plan, Ecology is not requiring further cleanup at this time. However, Ecology recommends looking into the use of biodegradable targets at the shooting range.
Ecology requires best management practices at the site. These include ongoing controls and required maintenance to prevent exposure to contaminants. For example, shot size is restricted to #8 or smaller to limit the shot fall areas. A full list of best management practices is in the draft periodic review report.
The property owner is responsible for continuing to implement best management practices and monitoring groundwater at least once between each periodic review. The next periodic review will be in about five years.
