We invite your comments on an environmental study of this contaminated site. This investigation is important for planning the cleanup.
Chevron USA Inc. is preparing to begin cleanup of the Chelan Chevron site, at 232 East Woodin Avenue in Chelan. Ecology will supervise the cleanup.
Background
The Chelan Chevron site has been a gas station since 1931. Over the years, leaks and spills from petroleum contaminated the soil and groundwater. The pollution has spread to nearby properties and is a concern for Lake Chelan, which is only 300 feet away.
Petroleum products contain many chemicals and one of them, benzene, is a known carcinogen. Harmful vapors could enter buildings and impact indoor air quality. Pollution in Lake Chelan could also harm fish and other wildlife.
The Remedial Investigation Report and other documents are available for review. A printed version of the report is available for review at the Department of Ecology Union Gap Office, or we can mail it to you by request.
