Since it was passed in 2008, Washington’s Children’s Safe Products Act has been a landmark law protecting our state’s children from toxic chemicals. The law, also known as CSPA, bans the use of lead, cadmium, phthalates and five toxic flame retardants in children’s products, and also requires manufacturers to report whether their children’s products contain chemicals of high concern to children.
The Washington Department of Ecology is updating the regulations that enforce CSPA. The proposed changes would add 19 chemicals to the reporting list of chemicals of high concern to children, while removing three chemicals from the list. The additions include the six flame retardant chemicals identified by the Washington Legislature in 2016. The proposed update also includes administrative changes to streamline the CSPA regulations.
Ecology is now seeking public input on the proposed changes to the CSPA regulations and the reporting list of chemicals. Comments will be accepted now through May 12. Testimony will be accepted during a public hearing on the proposed changes on April 25, both in-person and via webinar.
