Updating the Coordinated Prevention Grants program

Ecology grants fund local solid waste management and enforcement

OLYMPIA  –

The Washington Department of Ecology is updating the rules governing its Coordinated Prevention Grants program that has provided financial assistance to local governments since 1989 for solid and hazardous waste programs and planning, and also for the enforcement of solid waste laws.

Portions of the grant rules have not been updated since they were first written and need to be modernized to match current programs and needs. Ecology worked with an advisory committee to develop proposed updates, which include changing the name of the grant program to “Local Solid Waste Financial Assistance” to better reflect its mission.

Other proposed changes include dedicating a minimum amount for enforcement grants and combining two rules to simplify the regulations.

Ecology is seeking public comment on the proposed changes through July 7, and will hold a public meeting in Lacey and webinar June 27.
