Department of Ecology News Release - Sept. 26, 2017

Four firms plan cleanup projects in Seattle’s Georgetown

Ecology seeks comments on update to legal agreement

Seattle –

Four businesses that are jointly cleaning up underground contamination in the Georgetown neighborhood are also proposing to conduct special cleanup projects in the area. Two of the projects would test cleanup technologies, and one would treat soil and groundwater at one business location.

Ecology is asking the public to comment – through Oct. 31, 2017 – on project plans and a related amendment to a 2014 legal agreement called the “West of 4th” agreed order. The amendment would incorporate the proposed projects into the order.

The combined cleanup site lies between Fourth Avenue South and the Duwamish Waterway, and between South Lucile and Fidalgo streets. The area contains solvents, metals and related compounds that originated from Burlington Environmental, LLC, Art Brass Plating, Inc., Blaser Die Casting Co., and Capital Industries, Inc.

The companies are proposing two long-term studies to find out whether particular types of treatment can be effective in this area, and separately beginning a partial cleanup called an “interim action.” They are jointly evaluating cleanup remedies and developing cleanup proposals for a future proposed cleanup action plan that would be subject to public review and comment.

Helping the Lower Duwamish cleanup

The West of 4th site is located near the Lower Duwamish Waterway cleanup, jointly overseen by Ecology and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Cleanup of the West of 4th site will contribute to a larger effort to control sources of contamination in the Duwamish Valley.
