Washington's plan for investing VW funds

In 2015, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a notice of violation to the automaker Volkswagen, after it was discovered that the company illegally installed software on many of its diesel vehicles. The software allowed the vehicles to pass emissions tests when, in reality, they were emitting up to 40 times the permitted levels of harmful nitrogen oxides.

$141 million from Volkswagen settlements

These actions violated both the federal Clean Air Act and Washington state’s Clean Air Act. Washington received $112.7 million from the federal settlement and an additional $28.4 million from a settlement for violations of state law. As the lead agency designated by Gov. Jay Inslee, Washington is distributing $141 million from these settlements to reduce air pollution and support zero-emission transportation.
