Projects we funded through grants
As of February 2020, we have committed $91 million statewide to support projects that reduce toxic diesel emissions and greenhouse gas emissions from school buses, transit buses, ferries, state fleet electric vehicles, port drayage trucks, shorepower, and to install light duty electric vehicle charging stations. 39 electric vehicle charging stations at workplaces — $400,000
Expanding the availability of electric vehicle charging for employees at their workplace is expected to reduce range anxiety, increase exposure to electric vehicles, and accelerate consumer adoption of new and used battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric, light-duty vehicles. We awarded about $400,000 to install 38 level two chargers and one DC fast charger at eight government workplaces in six counties across the state.
41 electric vehicle charging stations along high-transportation corridors — $3 million
Over 50 entities submitted applications for nearly $4 million available to install direct current fast chargers along Washington’s transportation corridors. We awarded grants to install 41 charging stations in eight counties across the state.
17 cleaner drayage trucks at public ports — $50,000
The Washington Legislature directed $1.2 million in state penalty funds to the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) clean truck program and for shore power electrification for vessels in Tacoma. The NWSA has scraped 17 dirty drayage trucks and replaced them with trucks that have clean diesel technologies. The NWSA is developing plans to install shore power for vessels visiting the Port of Tacoma.
130 electric vehicles to state fleets — $6 million
In 2015, Gov. Jay Inslee announced the Washington State Electric Fleets Initiative, setting a target that at least 20 percent of all new state government passenger vehicle purchases are electric vehicles. We are working with state government agencies to invest $6 million to add electric vehicles to the state fleets. This investment will save millions in fuel and maintenance costs, while reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution.
336 cleaner diesel school buses — $12 million
We have awarded $12 million to purchase 336 buses statewide in 83 school districts. Each $35,000 award roughly covers the costs to purchase clean diesel technology or upgrade to a clean propane engine.
40 all-electric school buses — $13 million
We have awarded over $13 million from the federal settlement to purchase 40 all-electric school buses for 22 school districts across 14 counties in Washington. Each award will help cover the cost difference between a diesel school bus and an all-electric school bus. This effort is expected to increase public awareness and confidence in zero-emission vehicle technology, and will improve air quality for over 3,000 student passengers every day!
66 zero emission electric transit buses — $24 million
We have awarded $24 million from both settlements to purchase 66 electric transit buses in Benton, Clark, King, Lewis, Pierce, Snohomish, and Spokane counties. The grants are intended to help cover the additional costs of purchasing an electric bus, compared to a conventional diesel bus. Transit agencies can also use some of the funding to pay for charging stations.
Hybrid-electric Jumbo Mark II ferry — $35 million
We dedicated up to $35 million to convert the first Washington state Jumbo Mark II ferry to hybrid-electric power, allowing one of the state's biggest ferries to run primarily on battery power. This investment reduces fuel consumption by 400,000 gallons per year and reduces toxic air pollution and 172,000 tons of greenhouse gas.
3 shore power systems for ocean going vessels at public ports — $5 million
We have awarded over $5 million from both the state penalty and the federal settlement to install shore power for ocean going vessels at three ports in Pierce and King Counties. These projects will help Washington ports accelerate the transition to zero emission technology and further encourage other marine vessels to convert to shore power capability.
