Landfill methane emissions reduction grants

We're working to reduce methane emissions from landfills. This is an effective way to cut methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. When organic material (such as food and yard waste) decomposes in a landfill, it emits methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) — two gases that contribute to climate change. Methane has more than 80 times the global warming potential (GWP) of CO2 over a 20‑year period. Methane is responsible for more than 25% of the global warming happening today. By 2050, Washington is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 95% below 1990 levels.

Applications are not being accepted at this time.
Application period: August 6, 2024 – October 1, 2024
Funding is available for the following entities:
- Owners and operators of municipal solid waste landfills
Projects must be necessary and directly related to meeting or exceeding the compliance requirements in Chapter 173‑408 WAC.

These grants are paid for by funds from the Climate Commitment Act. The Climate Commitment Act supports Washington's climate action efforts by putting cap-and-invest dollars to work reducing climate pollution, creating jobs, and improving public health.
