The Washington Department of Ecology and the U.S. Coast Guard are coordinating a response -- along with Islands’ Oil Spill Association (IOSA) -- to the grounding of a 22-foot Boston Whaler off the south end of Long Island.
The grounding occurred at approximately 1 a.m. this morning. The driver was not injured. No gasoline has spilled into the water, however spill responders believe the boat’s fuel tank could be holding as much as 60 gallons. The responders are assessing vessel for damage and determining next steps to prevent a fuel spill and remove the boat.
The gasoline on the vessel (about 60 gallons) was successfully pumped off by IOSA and Vessel Assist. The Island Transporter landing craft from Anacortes was utilized to transport the forklift and supplies to the site. The boat was successfully lifted off the rocks. The U.S. Coast Guard and Ecology spill responders were on-scene to assist and oversee the recovery operations.
