Kodiak Enterprise Fire

The Washington Dept. of Ecology, U.S. Coast Guard, Tacoma Fire Department, EPA, and other agencies are continuing their response to the 253-foot fishing vessel, Kodiak Enterprise, which caught fire Saturday in the Hylebos Waterway in Tacoma.

Status updates

Friday, April 21, 2023 -- 5:00 p.m.

The Unified Command was stood down today, April 21. 

The remaining diesel aboard the vessel was successfully removed with no fuel spilled or sheening. The Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the incident. 

The claims process will remain open for anyone who may be financially impacted by this incident. The claims number is 206-378-6090.

Saturday, April 15, 2023 -- 4:00 p.m.

The fire on the Kodiak Enterprise has been extinguished. Next steps include stabilizing the vessel, and removing the remaining fuel on board.

The Hylebos Waterway is open. Contact the Coast Guard for specifics on moving through the area..

Thursday, April 13, 2023 -- 5:00 p.m.

Responders are still on scene, and have been checking the the Kodiak Enterprise for additional hot spots and pockets of water. The vessel continues to remain stable, and crews are developing a plan to safely remove any remaining fuel onboard.

Wednesday, April 12, 2023 -- 3:00 p.m.

Firefighters continue to extinguish several spot fires on the Kodiak Enterprise. The vessel remains stable while we continue dewatering efforts.

Air monitoring is continuing, and shows no results exceeding levels of concern.

Tuesday, April 11, 2023 -- 6:45 p.m.

We continue to respond to the fire on the fishing vessel, Kodiak Enterprise. There was a light sheen on the water within the boom, but the amount is not recoverable. There has not been a release of the diesel fuel stored on the vessel.

Air monitoring results have not shown particulates above normal levels. 

The Unified Command continues to monitor the vessel’s stability, and there is currently no imminent threat of the vessel sinking at this time.

Vessels can now request to transit the safety zone established on the Hylebos Waterway. Recreational vessels should contact the Coast Guard Cutter on VHF21A or call 206-217-6002. Commercial traffic should contact Seattle Traffic on VHF14.

Tuesday, April 11, 2023 -- 10:30 a.m.

The Washington Dept. of Ecology and its partners are continuing their response to the fishing vessel, Kodiak Enterprise, owned by Trident Seafoods, which caught fire Saturday in the Hylebos Waterway in Tacoma. 

Responders on scene have not observed a spill or oil sheen in the water. The vessel is surrounded by three layers of containment boom as a precaution. Responders and equipment are staged and ready to respond if pollution is observed in the waterway.

The Hylebos Waterway remains closed to vessel traffic. There is not an anticipated time for when the waterway will be reopened, and the Coast Guard is working to minimize impacts to vessel traffic. 

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. More updates on the response will be issued as they become available.
