Should I Become a Bring Your Own Cup Coffee Shop?

(The short answer is YES)

You’ll be doing your community and the environment a favor. Plus, by accepting and promoting reusable cups for “to-go” orders and providing reusable mugs for orders "in house," you're giving your customers all the more reason to stop in on a regular basis.

Good things happen when they bring their own cup

  • Save on single-use product costs like cups, lids, and sleeves
  • Reduce waste and wasted time taking out trash and restocking cups
  • Get featured on our website’s BYOC map
  • Help build a culture of reuse

Ways to encourage customers to bring their own cup

Post the Sign, Save the Planet!

Place a BYOC sign in a visible spot, like on the front door, in a drive-thru window, or where customers pick up their drink. If you’d like a BYOC window cling or table tent, contact Lauren.DiRe@ecy.wa.gov.

Ask your customers Before they Order!

Ask customers before they order if they brought a personal cup. Or, if your business has reusable mugs, ask them if their order is for here or to-go.

They bring their cup, you offer a discount!

Offer customers a small discount or other reward for bringing their own reusable cup.

Remember!

You do not need to clean cups for customers.
Just let them know you only accept cups that are already clean. Check out the Washington Food Code for more information on how to safely accept reusables.
