Habitat monitoring
We collect data on the health of environmental systems that support plant and animal life. Our research helps us to restore and measure the health of important habitats across the state that are crucial for the survival of Washington's diverse plant and animal populations.
We study freshwater and saltwater habitats to protect the smallest aquatic creatures, important salmon species, and wildlife on land.
We provide access to that data through reports, databases, maps, and user-friendly online tools.

Saltwater habitats
Benthic taxonomists study the creatures that live at the bottom of Puget Sound. See their Scientific descriptions of species to learn more about these communities.
Freshwater habitats
- Stream biological monitoring evaluates the health of rivers and streams by studying multiple aquatic communities.
- Watershed health monitoring collects data and identifies regional trends in river and stream health.
- Forest practices effectiveness monitoring evaluates whether forest practices rules protect fish, wildlife, and water quality.
