Litter studies provide information about the types, amounts, distribution and sources of litter in the state. They also provide valuable insights on residents' attitudes and behaviors around littering. This information is used to inform and evaluate litter prevention efforts.
2022 Litter Composition and Generation Study
Washington's last litter study occurred in 2004. Restored funding is allowing Ecology to conduct a comprehensive litter study throughout 2022. Results of the 2022 Litter Composition and Generation Study will be available in March 2023. This study establishes current information about the distribution, types, amount and sources of litter on Washington roadways, interchanges, public areas and waterways. Having current data on the state of litter helps us evaluate and implement litter prevention efforts over time.
