Between 1993 and 2006, the former mill property saw many changes. During this time, buildings were demolished, contaminated material was removed, and soil pits filled in with clean soil. Because these actions were not part of a formal Cleanup Action Plan, we call them interim actions. These interim actions focused on removing contaminated material from the site and transporting it to appropriate landfills. This includes:
- Over 24,000 tons of petroleum-contaminated soil and concrete (that’s about 40 football fields covered with a foot of soil).
- 2,700 cubic yards of petroleum-contaminated wood residue left from the hog fuel pile.
- 2,500 sunken logs from the log pond.
- 4,800 tons of soil from the spent sulfite liquor lagoon.
