Freshwater algae control grant program

Toxic algae blooms can make people, pets, and livestock sick. We offer a funding program to address problem blooms. The Freshwater Algae Program (FAP) has an annual funding cycle for projects to manage toxic algae blooms (cyanobacteria). 
 

Funding cycle

  • Amount of funding available: Ranges from $100,000 to $200,000
  • Grant award limit: The maximum grant amount for freshwater algae program grants is $50,000.
  • Amount of matching funds required: Ecology no longer requires grant recipients to provide matching funds for these grants.

Applications are not being accepted at this time.

Applications were accepted Oct. 15, 2024 through Dec. 17, 2024. Stay tuned for our next application cycle. 

Applications are started, completed, and submitted via Ecology's Administration of Grants and Loans (EAGL) system. 

Funding is available for the following entities:

Eligible public bodies:

  • State agencies
  • Counties & cities
  • Special purpose districts
  • Tribes

Eligible activities include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Education and outreach
  • Freshwater algae control and management
  • Freshwater algae management plans
  • Freshwater algae monitoring programs
  • Freshwater algae pilot projects
  • Freshwater algae research
  • Freshwater algae sampling equipment
  • Nutrient reduction activities

Priority is given to lakes in which harmful freshwater algae have occurred within the past three years.
