Bainbridge Island Amendment 2018
Public comment period extended until Nov. 9, 2018
The City of Bainbridge Island and Ecology are extending the joint public comment period for the SMP amendment. Public comments regarding the re-noticed Critical Area provisions and the non-conforming provisions amendment should be sent to the city during the extended comment period running from Sept. 10 through Nov. 9, 2018, at 5 p.m. In addition, a joint local-state public hearing for the amendment was held on Sept. 11, 2018. Public comments sent to the city and testimonies provided at the joint public hearing will be shared with us.
The city has prepared draft amendments to update the critical areas provisions of their Shoreline Master Program, following the recent adoption of their updated Critical Areas Ordinance. The stated purpose of this amendment is to eliminate confusion and improve implementation effectiveness by removing unnecessary differences between the city's updated Critical Areas Ordinance and the critical areas protections within the SMP. The amendment also includes modifications to the non-conforming provisions of the draft SMP amendment materials.
The draft SMP materials are available for in-person review at the following location:
City of Bainbridge Island
Department of Planning and Community Development

Next steps: response to public comment and decision
The city will prepare a summary of comments, with their response, to be posted on our website a few weeks after the public comment period closes. We will review and make a determination of consistency prior to local adoption.
After local adoption, the SMP amendment will be formally submitted to us for final decision per WAC 173-26-104 and WAC 173-26-110. No additional comment period will occur during the state review process. This may be your only opportunity to comment on this proposed SMP amendment.
