Our nation’s second largest marine estuary faces a number of challenges related to population growth and development, as well as habitat loss and multiple sources of pollution. Cleaning up contamination

In Washington, we've identified over 13,000 contaminated sites in need of cleanup. In the Northwest Region, there are over 3,000 identified or active sites. We make progress daily. Cleanup work at over 4,000 formerly-contaminated sites has been completed in the Northwest Region's seven counties. Learn more about our contamination cleanup work.

Three comment periods for the Lower Duwamish Waterway begin in March

We invite you to comment on two cleanup sites in the Lower Duwamish Waterway as well as a consent decree settling who will pay for sediment cleanup in the river.
