Cleaning up contamination
In Washington, we've identified over 13,000 contaminated sites in need of cleanup. In the Northwest Region, there are over 3,000 identified or active sites. We make progress daily. Cleanup work at over 4,000 formerly-contaminated sites has been completed in the Northwest Region's seven counties. Learn more about our contamination cleanup work.
Study shows fecal bacteria levels have declined in the Snohomish River Basin
Sustained local efforts and clean water projects have reduced bacteria pollution in Snohomish County.
Over the course of many decades, human activities led to water polluted by fecal bacteria in the Snohomish River Basin. Today, the region is seeing reduced bacteria levels and cleaner water because of projects stewarded by local partners. The projects were informed by previous environmental studies and a water cleanup plan.
