Plaza Cleaners groundwater monitoring

We are monitoring the groundwater at the former Plaza Cleaners site (also called Lakewood Ponders Corner) south of Tacoma, where legacy chemicals from past dry-cleaning operations continue to exceed the state Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA) cleanup levels.

Compliance groundwater monitoring

In 1981, volatile organic compounds were identified in two Lakewood Water District supply wells. The Plaza Cleaners property was identified as the source. Cleanup activities have been implemented over the years. Groundwater samples are collected every 18 months from select wells to monitor concentrations of tetrachloroethene (PCE) that continue to exceed groundwater standards to evaluate the effectiveness of cleanup activities.

Scientist pulls water from a monitoring well that looks like a rusty pipe in the ground. She is beside a van in a parking lot.
